Fine woodcut book on ornithology by Pierre Belon (1517-1564), here in the first edition. Belon was a French naturalist who traveled widely and published his observations in several books devoted to the natural history of birds and marine animals, as well as his impressions of the Levant. Belon travelled around the eastern Mediterranean in the years 1546-1549, visiting Greece, Crete, Turkey, Egypt and Arabia attached as a naturalist to the French embassy to the Ottoman Empire. On his travels he collected the material for his works on ornithology. This book is a reissue of the illustrations of Belon?s Histore de la nature des oyseaux (1555) and his Les observations de plusieurs singularitez et choses memorables (1553). Provided with epigrams and giving special attention to the various names by which the depicted animals and other matters of subject had been previously identified. It contains a titlepage with broad woodcut border, 218 woodcuts within the text (depicting birds, mammals, fish, reptiles, plants and trees and several of male and female figures in various costumes, a map of Alexandria and one of the Hellespont) a large printers device, one folding map of Mount Sinai and a large folding map of Mount Athos and its surroundings. An attractive, clean copy.
